Bloody Maundy Thursday

Mike and Pia never imagined going out to buy bread along Aguirre Street in BF could turn out to be so bloody.

Helmet rolling on the pavement
While backing out from the parking area of Pan De Manila, Mike and Pia saw a speeding scooter run pass an unpainted street hump.  The scooter jerked upward as it drove pass the hump. When it hit the ground, it wiggled out of control and then dropped on its side.  It eventually skidded down to a halt.  Pia saw the scooter's female passenger flip over and hit the pavement.

"Mike, tulungan  natin! tulungan natin!" shouted Pia

"OO, teka! teka!" said Mike as he maneuvered the car to the side of the road.

Mike felt surreal seeing the passenger's helmet rolling on the pavement.  It was a bizarre sight.  He stopped the car a few meters away from the accident.

60 kilometers per hour
Not really knowing what to do, Mike got out of the car and approached the scooter driver and the passenger.  Several people have already gotten to them.  The driver of the scooter, now up, was screaming something.  He was asking for help.

Mike said something about E-Med being close and hurriedly went back to the car and brought it closer. Pia got out of the front passenger seat and went to the back. Mike reclined the passenger seat just as people carried the unconscious woman inside the car.  The scooter's driver got in the back.

Mike drove as fast as he safely could. Inside the car, the man was trying his best to talk to his wife.  The injured woman was falling in and out of consciousness.  Mike could hear her moan.  The man said something about not going fast, just 60km/hour, not seeing the hump, seeing the car ahead but not the hump... He was panicking.  Mike thought "60 kilometers per hour?!!!" but kept quiet.

Bleeding on the passenger seat
Mike slowed down as they arrived at E-Med.  It was closed.  It was Maundy Thursday!

"Mike, sa hospital. Paranaque Medical Center! Bukas yun." Pia said.  Mike drove on.  The man was now holding his wife's head, trying to stop the bleeding.  Mike urged the man to keep talking to his wife.

Mike wasn't sure, but the man said something about the blood and he sounded apologetic.

At the Hospital
Arriving at Paranaque Medical Center, Mike drove straight to the Emergency Bay, got out and looked for a doctor.  He found one and then someone wheeled out a wheelchair.

Pia noticed that the people at the hospital were calm, almost emotionless.  The doctors and nurses brought the injured woman into the ER.  The man followed but came back out, asking Mike for his number.  Mike and the man exchanged cell numbers.  Mike then promised to go back to the place where the man left his scooter.

Back at the scene
Mike and Pia went back to the place of the accident.  Looking for the scooter, they found a house caretaker who parked it in front of a house a few meters from where the accident took place.  Mike asked him if he could put the scooter inside the garage until the driver could return for it.  Generously, the caretaker said yes and gave Mike his cellphone number.  Mike then called up the hospital and left the information about the scooter.  He also texted the information to the man.

The text after
A day or two after that Maundy Thursday, Mike received a text message from the man saying that his wife was alright.
