Typhoon Basyang hit Manila the evening of 16 July 2010. Strong winds caused power services to fail metro-wide and Mike and Pia were caught unprepared.
At night without electricity, it was difficult for Pia who was by then 6 months pregnant. It was dark, humid and hot.
Mike realized that while they have enough food and water, they sorely lacked a few other important items:
1. longer-lasting portable emergency light (flashlights weren't enough)
2. portable battery operated am/fm radio (using the car's radio was inconvenient)
3. portable battery operated fan (it was hot!)
So the next day, Mike and Pia bought a portable emergency light/fan/radio unit to ease their discomfort.
As things got back to normal, Mike and Pia realized how much they have become dependent on technology. During the days without electricity, they had to sleep without air-conditioning or electric fans, refrain from using their cellphones too much to conserve battery power and could not go online.
Struck by the feeling of being disconnected and too dependent on technology, Mike felt they needed to do something more. So Mike proposed to Pia that they reserve one or two days in a year to live without the usual conveniences of technology.
Mike feels that by doing this, their family will be forced to prepare for emergencies and it will help lessen the false need to be always connected online.
